Romance, speeches, and golden light in a historic venue
Some venues make you feel like you’ve stepped into a period drama the second you arrive, and Ashridge House is one of them. With its history as a royal residence and its jaw-dropping architecture, it’s easily one of my favourite wedding venues in Hertfordshire. And Sophie & James’ wedding here showed exactly why.
The day itself was warm and bright, which set the tone for a relaxed and beautiful celebration. The civil ceremony took place right on Ashridge’s iconic central staircase — a setting so striking that even I had to stop for a second to take it all in. The natural light pouring through the tall windows made the vows feel all the more magical.
One of my favourite parts of the day was the speeches. If you’ve photographed a few weddings, you know this moment is pure gold: people laughing until they cry, touching words that catch everyone by surprise, and the occasional joke that makes the bride and groom bury their faces in their hands. For me, it’s the kind of authenticity that makes documentary wedding photography so powerful.
Later, we slipped outside into the expansive grounds for a portrait session. The gardens at Ashridge House are a photographer’s dream, with so many backdrops it feels like you could shoot there for a week and still find new spots. Sophie & James were total naturals in front of the camera, making it less of a photoshoot and more like a walk with two friends who just happened to be dressed to the nines.
