Henna, streetlights, and a marquee that almost lifted off
Some weddings stretch over days, some over weeks. Payal & Amar’s did both — first with a colourful Mendhi night in Edgware, then a little later with their civil ceremony at Stephens House & Gardens in Finchley. Two very different vibes, both full of joy.
Marquee Mendhi in Edgware
Their Mendhi took place in the garden of their family home, with a marquee pitched up like a private festival. Inside, the air smelled of spices and fresh flowers, music poured out of speakers, and Payal sat while her hands and arms were covered in intricate henna. Amar drifted between guests, teased, toasted, and pulled back into dance circles.
Before the crowd swallowed them, we snuck outside for a quick couple shoot on the street. Streetlights, late-night London hum, neighbours peeking out of windows — it felt rebellious in the best way. Five minutes later they were back inside, and so were we, dancing shoulder to shoulder as the marquee shook with drumming and laughter.
Civil Ceremony at Stephens House & Gardens
A couple of weeks later, part two. Stephens House & Gardens, right by Finchley Central station, was the perfect contrast: calm lawns, Victorian architecture, trees framing the day. Their civil ceremony was intimate but lively, filled with jokes, smiles, and that “we’ve been here before” comfort. Guests beamed, vows were said, papers signed — and then we slipped into the gardens for portraits among the paths and flowers.
Why This Worked So Well
A garden marquee in Edgware made the Mendhi feel like a homegrown celebration — relaxed, colourful, and rooted in family.
Stephens House & Gardens gave them a backdrop of elegance and calm for the official side. The perfect North London balance of tradition and ease.
Payal & Amar — thank you for letting me document both sides of your story. From henna under fairy lights in Edgware to vows under trees in Finchley, it was all heart, all fun, and an absolute joy to capture.
